I promise. I wrote this. That said. Over the past few weeks, I have been immersed in the AI world that is currently EXPLODING. I wanted to roll my eyes and ignore it as a creative who started in the Fine Arts, became a web designer, and now teaches graphic design. But AI is coming for us, and as creatives, we need to, at the very least, recognize will going to impact us. As I type this, I am getting a notification from a Wired article about how AI is currently moving and being deployed so fast that tech leaders are calling for a pause on ChatGPT in an open letter. “It warns that language models like GPT-4 can already compete with humans at a growing range of tasks and could be used to automate jobs and spread misinformation. The letter also raises the distant prospect of AI systems that could replace humans and remake civilization.” That last part is not a joke.
That is how quickly this has taken off and how TERRIFYING it is. I’m not here to document that. However, I’m not going to lie; I have had a couple of sleepless nights wondering what the next few years will look like because of how quickly this new tech has progressed just in the last month—the good and very bad possibilities. I’ll provide a few links to my reading, and you can judge yourself. I am starting this blog to document how I am testing and using AI in my workflow as the co-host of The Strange South podcast. It’s being used more than you realize to write and create the content you already read and see. It is a way to elevate and speed up production right now, just in my little corner of the world with the current tools available. That said. Everyone needs to keep an eye on what is happening. The future is now, and the tech leaders are right to call for a pause. You need to pay attention.
