I need simplicity to focus on content and design, not bandwidth, spam, or database issues. I also have to work on a camp workshop for JSU’s GASP this Summer, and I am committed to reworking a lot (ALL) of my online courses again to…SIMPLIFY for the Fall and address the learning style of post-Covid students. It’s a thing. In between all that, I’m going to (this is me talking to future Patrice) GET OFF THE COMPUTER & CREATE! But not today. Today, I’m exploring how to streamline my information intake using AI.
I follow Nat on IG, and she has SO MUCH INFO it takes me a couple of views each time she posts something to grasp what she is doing. I’m from the South. We talk slow. She does not.
Last night she was talking about automation, which is the selling point with AI right now as a freelancer or entrepreneur who can not yet afford the people or time needed to help advance their business. Nat was talking about automating her mailing list and how she parses information through Feedly. I used Feedly a while back, but since the explosion of AI tools, everything is getting “smarter,” faster, and more useful (and more expensive.) So this morning, I’ve been training Feedly’s AI to find content for me that is relevant to my interests and to summarize in digestible pieces. AI technology is moving SO FAST that it’s overwhelming (the government will not be able to keep up with it…they will shut it down first…but I don’t know if they can at this point with the use and investment of large (read: money) corporations. This AI movement is business profit-driven, not academic-driven.) Back on topic.
I currently use Feedly to grab articles and then ChatGPT4 to summarize the essential points so I can consume them faster. I could automate even this, but I do not have the ChatGPT plugin, which you have to get on a mailing list to be “chosen.”) Summarization does not get all the nuances and details, but it helps me quickly find the articles that I want to revisit and spend my time on. AI for research and organization of information is A GAMECHANGER! So many people and new businesses are already on this; I already feel ten years behind.
Forbes predicts, “In the coming decade, the technology will wipe out 300 million jobs, they forecast. That’s one in every 11 jobs on the planet.” I was listening to a Marketing podcast, and they predict AI will affect 30% of the job market within two years. We are already seeing companies lay off people from jobs they are betting AI will be able to do faster and better in the upcoming year. Prepared, not scared. There is so much uncertainty about AI, but one thing is for sure we are at the beginning of a MASSIVE technological pivot in how we work, how we teach, and how we learn. But today, simplicity of info to survive, and tomorrow, I’ll create.
SUMMARY
Patrice is working on a presentation for SECAC, migrating a WordPress site to Squarespace, planning a JSU GASP workshop, and revising online courses for post-Covid learners.
Utilizing AI for information management, Patrice uses Feedly's AI to curate and summarize content relevant to their interests, although they are still waiting for the ChatGPT plugin.
Acknowledging the fast-paced evolution of AI, Patrice cites a prediction of AI displacing numerous jobs in the coming years, recognizing the transformative potential of AI in work, teaching, and learning.
